Our History

In July of 1977, Gerald Hayes was appointed as the first Chief Administration Officer who hired Mary Wiens as the first Director of Care for Meadowood Manor.

The idea of establishing a Baptist Seniors home in Winnipeg first came under discussion in 1973. Twenty four delegates from nine NABC churches met on June 18, 1973 at McDermot Avenue Baptist Church and elected a steering committee comprised of Rubin Spletzer (President), Richard Mueller (Vice-President), Walter Pohl (Secretary) and John Wiebe (Treasurer). This assembly listened and acted upon a presentation given by Mr. K. Collins of Manitoba Health and Social Development on the process required for establishing a senior’s home in the province.

On April 25, 1974, this steering committee was dissolved to make way for the establishment of the first Meadowood Manor Board of Directors. On May 23, 1974 elected members of that first Board included; Rubin Spletzer (President), Murray McClarty (Treasurer), Jurgen Schmidt (Secretary), Walter Koberstein (Fundraising), Arthur Arndt, Richard Mueller, George Schroth, and the Reverend Walter Stein.

The Board formally discussed land acquisition of various lots on St. Anne’s Road as early as May 6, 1974. The Manitoba Baptist Home Society Inc., the future owner and operator of this new Baptist home was incorporated in September 13, 1974. The land at our current site was purchased and the subsequent rapid increase in value of the land investment from $58, 500 to $240,000 provided the majority of the financial contribution for the Society to proceed with construction.In 1977, after seemingly endless consultation with the Manitoba Government and Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation, the Personal Care Home tender was awarded to Taubensee Construction, and the apartment tower tender was awarded to Crystal Builders.

At the time of construction, the combined value of both buildings was estimated at 3.1 million dollars.
